French artist and designer, and AFL’s 2025 Gala Honoree, Mathieu Lehanneur, created the State of the World sculpture series by using population data for 140 countries, provided by the United Nations. Each of these 3D-printed aluminum sculptures represents one individual country. The country's birth rate, life expectancy, and history are reflected in the shape of the sculpture, with each individual groove representing an age from 1-100. At the base are newborn children, while the peak represents the elderly. Most of the sculptures are bottom-heavy, demonstrating how few people in society live to be 100 years old. As a result, major country-specific events like wars or baby booms can be read and touched, as can global events including economic development or retirement trends. Through these sculptures, Mathieu makes visible all the people who are living right now on the same planet. This series was first presented at Design Miami Basel and is a continuation of an earlier series of sculptures, called The Age of the World, created in 2009.
This sculpture duo celebrates the union of France and the United States in a powerful reflection of transatlantic friendship.
